Theme:
(from the conference website) " ... we
celebrate the maritime world of the Anglo- Saxons. We
recognize that the sea can be protector or destroyer, the giver of new opportunities, and the
taker of life. The maritime environment of the Anglo Saxons is visible in their imagination
and tangible culture--but this is not as well-known as one might expect. The conference will
therefore focus on the Anglo-Saxon understanding and use of their maritime environment as
reflected in their textual and material culture. We will be looking for topics that address
travel and adventure; trade and maritime networks; the fishery; flora and fauna of the
maritime and littoral regions; the sea and the imagination; the littoral as liminal space; and
the symbolism of the sea."
Location:
The conference will be held at Memorial University in St.
John's, Newfoundland.
